The International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS) strongly condemns the baseless and malicious designation by the Duterte government’s Anti-Terrorism Council (ATC) of Jose Maria Sison along with 18 others including interim Chairperson of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) Negotiating Panel Juliet de Lima Sison, NDFP peace consultants and known revolutionaries as “terrorists”. The ATC, enabled by a recent Anti-Terrorism Law railroaded in the Philippine Congress, is composed exclusively of appointees of Pres. Duterte. The law is currently under question before the Supreme Court. One person’s “terrorist” is another’s freedom fighter. The same is true for Palestinians viewed by Zionist Israel today. Prof. Sison, Chairperson Emeritus of the ILPS, is a consistent champion of anti-imperialist and democratic struggles of workers and oppressed peoples and nations. More than half a century has proven this indubitable and irrefutable fact. The designation of Sison as a “terrorist” is an old lie spread first by the United States as early as 2002 following its so-called “war on terror”. The case was later dismissed in the European Union in 2009. With the US imperialist long war extending from West Asia into the Indo-Pacific region, the US and its client state in the Philippines are repeating the same old fabrication and vilification campaign against sterling freedom fighters. It is the US and its minions who are the real terrorists. The Duterte regime particularly, with the political and military backing by the United States, has maimed, killed, and injured tens of thousands in the Philippines denounced no less by an International People’s Tribunal and now facing investigation for war crimes and grave human rights violations in various international bodies. Durterte promised that he will complete peace negotiations with the Philippine Left. Sison was the Chief Political Consultant of the NDFP engaged in the peace negotiations. Duterte terminated the talks in February 2017 and has since militarized and bombarded civilian communities, arrested, detained, tortured, and killed peace consultants protected under a Joint Agreement on Safety and Immunity Guarantees (JASIG), murdered worker and peasant leaders, and hunted down activists. Even community food pantries amid the pandemic are now being red-tagged by a “National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict”. The Philippine armed conflict will not end so long as poverty, exploitation, and injustice remain. Prof. Sison, true to his unremitting commitment, will see through the end of the tyrannical US-Duterte regime and will work untiringly for the national and social liberation of peoples all over the world from the scourge of imperialism, fascism, militarism, and unjust wars. Defend Jose Maria Sison! Delist peace negotiators, consultants, and revolutionaries from the terrorist list! End the US-Duterte regime! Long live international solidarity! ### Signed: Len Cooper ILPS Chairperson 14 May 2021 |
