MANILA. Progressive people’s organizations under the Philippines chapter of the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS-Phils) welcome the Manilakbayan caravan from Mindanao as they arrive in Metro Manila today.

“We expect more support as they camp-out at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman campus and the Liwasang Bonifacio to press the Aquino government to stop the attacks on Lumad schools, communities and people,” the ILPS-Phils said.

The Lumad issue gained international support from a broad spectrum of social forces as well as United Nations agencies over the past month.

The ILPS will be holding its 5th International Assembly with delegates expected from dozens of countries as world leaders of 21 economies gather for the Asia Pacific Cooperation Agreement (APEC) in Manila.

“We are opposed to the US, China and Russia agenda in APEC. The pact straddles two continents across the Pacific with poor underdeveloped economies. We are now consolidating peoples’ solidarity in Asia, Latin America and the rest of the world to challenge the Obama-Xi-Putin power play and the power trip of Aquino as host,” the ILPS-Phils said.

It added that “the Lumad tragedy speaks voluminously about corporate plunder and state-led militarization. The Manilakbayan, the ILPS contingent and the Peoples’ Campaign against Imperialist Globalization (PCAIG) are all set for the ‘APEC Battle in Manila’.

After a series of international conferences of peasants, women and migrants on Nov. 12-13, the 5th International Assembly of the ILPS on Nov. 14-16, the International Festival of Peoples’ Resistance and Struggle on Nov. 17, street demonstrations leading to the APEC Summit are set.
