Condolences on the death of Niexhmije Hoxa

I wish to express my condolences to the family, comrades and friends of Nexhmije Hoxa– wife, partner and comrade of Enver Hoxa, who became Prime Minister of Albania and Communist Party Secretary-General after the end of the Second World War in 1944.

Nexhmije Hoxa was a founding member of the Albanian Communist Party. She was involved in the anti-fascist movement during the Second World War and was sentenced to 13 years of prison by the then Albanian reactionary authorities but during the trial, she went underground and joined the Albanian National Liberation Army. Liberation was won in 1944.

Nexhmije was a prominent member of the Albanian Peoples’ Assembly, and held many important posts in the Albanian Women’s Movement, the Peoples’ Parliament, and the Albanian Communist Party. She was a prominent writer and became the Director of the Institute of Marxist Leninist Studies and was prominent in the struggles against the restoration of capitalism in the Soviet Union and opportunism within the Party of Labour of Albania.

She continued her work and activities after the death of her husband Enver Hoxa in 1985, and worked to defend the socialist legacy of the Party of Labour of Albania against revisionism and opportunism. She was imprisoned and put under house arrest from 1991 but she kept aloft the banner of socialism in her interviews and writings.

Nexhmije died on the 26^th of February at her home in Tirana, Albania. Up to that time, she was the oldest living member of the Communist Leadership of Albania. She was a prominent and important leader in Albanian history who stood against revisionism and imperialism.
