The International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS) Commission XIII (Commission on Science and Technology for People’s Development) condemns in the strongest possible terms the ongoing occupation, genocide, and racial cleansing being done by the Zionist state of Israel over Palestine. Israel must be punished for its war crimes committed against the Palestinian people.
Entering its two-week military occupation which has already killed at least 197 people, including 58 children and 1,235 injured according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
Israel’s decades of occupation of Palestine is a madness and should be opposed and stopped. That the Zionist state is using the products of modern science and technologies to impose its military rule in occupied Palestinian territories (OPT) and oppress and suppress the Palestinians is a big disgrace to the promise of science and technology.
One is water technology which Israel uses as a major tool in grabbing Palestinian lands. When settlers move in, the Zionist forces cut water lines going to Palestinian homes and divert them to illegal Israeli settlements for free, leaving Palestinians to have to pay for water.
According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, since May 10, 2021, at least 250,000 Palestinians were denied or have limited access to water as caused by the recent Israel military offensive in Palestine.[i]
Israel’s airstrikes are deliberately targeting energy, water treatment, and other critical infrastructures to lay siege to Gaza, while also bombing chemical plants that spew pollution into the air. Israel tests and “showcases” the lethality and technological precision of its weapons to potential buyers through its use on Palestinians, including tear gas, tanks, and missiles.
It has no concern whatsoever to the safety and lives of the civilian population. A stark example is the Israeli air raids of al-Jalaa tower, an 11-storey civilian building in Gaza City which housed international media The Associated Press and Al Jazeera Media Network. In these military attacks, at least 76 buildings have been flattened to the ground, 725 houses damaged, and 17,000 people displaced. [ii] An attack of this nature is designated a war crime by the United Nations.
Israel is the world’s largest developer and supplier of cyberwarfare technology which is being used to harass and attack individuals and organizations asserting the rights and freedom of Palestinians. In July 2020, an Israeli district court rejected a case to force the Ministry of Defense to revoke the export license of spyware company NSO Group, dealing a blow to victims of unlawful and targeted international surveillance. [iii]
In the health sector, a big irony is that Israel is leading the world in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic but at the same time denying Palestinians their right to health care and deliberately putting the Palestinian population to greater health risk. In December 2020, the Israeli Health Ministry began the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines that excluded the nearly 5 million Palestinians who live under Israeli military occupation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. This is a dishonor to scientists who develop modern vaccines and medical technology in their hope of improving the quality of people’s lives. [iv]
ILPS Commission XIII is one with the Palestinians in asserting their rights and freedom. We give our utmost support to contribute in the movement of defeating the racist and fascist Zionist state of Israel and its military forces. We will continue to educate and mobilize scientists in our advocacy to use science and technology to support various people’s movements around the world particularly those being waged by the Palestinians.
We demand that all scientific and technological research institutions immediately end any and all support with the Israeli occupation of Palestine.
We call on all scientists who care about the rights of the people to act and give solidarity to Palestine. Scientists can form mass organizations to organize science workers to fight against Zionism and all other proxies of imperialism.
From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!
