Declaration of the International League of Peoples’ Struggle- Provisional Committee of Latin America and the Caribbean (ILPS-L.A and C)
URGENT ACTION AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE AND DEFENSE FOR THE AMAZON
In the middle of the day, it was dark as night in several major Brazilian cities due to the dense smoke that accumulated in Brazilian skies. The ILPS condemns the situation in the Amazon, which, due to systematic attacks of predatory capitalism against the Amazon, and due to the hundreds of wildfires, which are devastating virgin forest, in addition to threatening to make surrounding cities uninhabitable. Fires in the Amazon have been burning for more than 16 days. They have destroyed historical proportions of the rainforest and threatened the lives of the region’s original peoples and the existence of our entire species.
We condemn the anti-environmentalist policies of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who continues to evade responsibility in his own government, placing blame, instead, on environmental defenders. Bolsonaro appointed a Minister of the Environment and his administration is allowing the deregulated dismantlement and cuts of 95% of the public resources needed to combat and control environmental destruction. Companies around the world, subject to the interests of US imperialism, are extracting resources and energy from people’s ancestral lands. The Brazilian government participates in this extraction as an expression of its allegiance with local and regional monopoly groups, who are boldly unleashing a true climate catastrophe and offloading the weight of this crisis on the people. This is what’s happening with the recent “secret agreement,” against the interests of people in both countries, clearly disadvantaging the Paraguayan people. It was negotiated by the reactionary governments of Brazil and Paraguay, in relation to the Itaipu Dam, a hydroelectric dam on the Paraná River located on the border between Brazil and Paraguay, which was rejected after protests in the streets and then suspended. The destruction of the Amazon Rainforest is a related case. It is disappearing, being turned into pastures and planted with African palm and developing plantations of narcotics.
We call for the global mobilization of people against the politics of imperialism and all reaction devastating nature and destroying our lives. We call for actions at each Brazil embassy and consulate.
No to imperialist global warming!
No to the destruction of the Amazon!
No to Bolsonaro! Water is not for sale! Not one more drop of indigenous blood spilled!
No more silence and inaction of capitalist and imperialist governments in the face of the destruction of the Amazon!
