Statement of the ILPS Africa and West Asia Regional Committee
Stop Political Repression!
Immediately Release Mwaivu Kaluka and Kinuthia Ndungu!
Release all Political Prisoners!
The ILPS Africa and West Asia Regional Committee condemns the arrests and strongly supports the call for the release of Mwaivu Kaluka and Kinuthia Ndungu, CPM Kenya National Chairperson and Organizing Secretary respectively. They were arrested by the US-Ruto regime last November 21st for organizing a demonstration against the state’s role in the ongoing crises of imperialist plunder, economic depression, foreign-backed militarism, rampant femicide, and environmental devastation in Kenya. This is a blatant denial of the freedom of speech and assembly.
Their arrest is proof of the growing political repression in this East African country. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reports that since the Gen Z protests against the Finance Bill of 2024 started in June of this year, 60 protesters have been killed; 610 have been injured during protests and; 1,376 people, including 24 journalists, have been arbitrarily arrested. Seventy-four cases of enforced disappearance have likewise been reported with 26 persons still missing.
The Ruto government is attacking the people in a high-handed attempt to stem a political crisis which, in fact, it created. This has been pointed out even by church leaders who called out Ruto for using “intimidation, abduction and assassination” to stifle dissent. Instead of listening to the people and heeding their demands, the regime is repressing them to better serve the interests and follow the dictates of its imperialist master.
We call on all freedom-loving Kenyans to rally behind the political prisoners and protect their hard-earned rights from anyone who may wish to deny them. Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom.
Stop Arbitrary Arrests and Detention!
Stop Enforced Disappearances and Abduction!
Stop Political Repression!
Free Mwaivu and Kinuthia!
Free All Political Prisoners!
Signed,
ILPS Africa and West Asia Regional Committee
