ILPS Global Day of Action

The ILPS calls on its member organizations to recognize March 29th as Day of the Landless with and in solidarity with peasants, farmers, farmworkers, indigenous peoples, fisherfolk, rural women, youth, and children. We invite anti-imperialists worldwide to hold educational activities around issues of landlessness, participate in build-up activities, and join or initiate actions on the day of action.

Background Context:

In the League’s ongoing campaign against imperialist plunder, ILPS through its Peasants Commission (6) is joining the Asian Peasant Coalition, Peoples’ Coalition on Food Sovereignty, and the Pesticide Action Network – Asia Pacific for a month of action leading up to Day of the Landless and culminating with Palestine Land Day.

In the last year, the imperialist countries — especially the United States — have been brutally violating democratic rights, increasing war and militarism, and intensifying their plunder of land and water of rural peoples of the Global South. The strategic decline of the United States has pushed it towards the path of fascism, acting in complete complicity of the Zionist entity’s genocide against the Palestinian, Lebanese, Syrian, and Yemeni peoples. In addition, the U.S. is also focusing heavily in the Asia-Pacific, with the Indo-Pacific Strategy to prepare themselves and their puppet governments for war against China; this includes the building and expansion of military bases and waging counter-insurgency programs against peasant and indigenous communities. Africa and Latin America are also suffering deep economic crisis from import-dependent, export-oriented  trade agendas imposed on their countries.

Land grabs in the name of “climate initiatives” and other neoliberal solutions like “carbon-offsetting” or modernizing the agriculture sector for enhanced productivity and income of peasants are put forward to combat the climate and economic crisis, while in reality stealing land and resources from the peoples of the countryside and making them face the brunt of ecological  and economic devastation mainly caused by the imperialist countries. The expanded reach of TNCs across resources such as seeds and fertilizers along with puppet governments privatizing agricultural lands for increased profits in semi-feudal, semi-colonial countries has caused displacement of farmers and turned them into migrant workers facing the most precarious situations.

The peasant struggle for land, food, and justice alongside other sectors in rural areas in the semi-colonial, semi-feudal countries of the Global South have never been more pertinent than now when imperialism is becoming more parasitic than ever and eroding the livelihood and the earth of the rural peoples.

On this year’s Day of the Landless, the League calls on its organizations and movements in service to the peasantry and other sectors based in the countryside to reaffirm our campaign against imperialist plunder, struggle for land to the tillers, and fight against imperialist institutions such as the IMF, World Bank, and the WTO in the build-up towards and during the day of action.
